1. How would you describe your community’s passion and spirit for hockey?

Southampton Ontario is located along the shores of Lake Huron, and most would think of our world class beaches first, but don’t be fooled! Hockey is in our blood! The Town of Saugeen Shores (which Southampton is a part) has a long history of being active on the ice! From the first outdoor rinks in Southampton built in the early 1900’s, to the current Southampton Coliseum Arena built in 1977, we have seen a rich life full of hockey greatness in Saugeen Shores. We have numerous hockey organizations and clubs that are strongly supported in Saugeen Shores, all of which use the Southampton Coliseum as part of their home ice for games, tournaments and training. This includes six recreational hockey teams (both for women and men), the G.C. Houston Elementary School Morning Hockey program and of course the Saugeen Shores Minor Hockey Association, which comprises of all levels of minor hockey for both boys and girls. Hockey in Saugeen Shores is alive and well, and coursing through our veins!

2. What arena project would most benefit from the prize money and what impact would this project have on your community?

The Southampton Coliseum needs to be made accessible to ensure that our whole community can enjoy this great sport. Several renovations, upgrades and refurbishments are necessary to keep this important community arena alive and continuing to function. The benefit to the community of these extensive projects is huge; by reaching the completion of a fully accessible community facility everyone can participate and enjoy events held there. Aside from the prize money, the chance of hosting a preseason NHL game as part of the grand prize package is an opportunity Saugeen Shores is dreaming of. We know our hockey- loving community would flock to the game! The economic spin off from hosting such a high caliber event in our Town would certainly allow our hockey community to open our doors to the local population and surrounding municipalities and put our best face forward, thus potentially extending all that Saugeen Shores has to offer to new tourism markets, and economic demographics.

3. Why should your community be the next Kraft Hockeyville?

The community of Saugeen Shores should be the next Kraft Hockeyville, as its love of the game can only be compared to that of its love of Country; it’s the air we breathe! Hockey in Saugeen Shores is an enormous part of the recreational opportunities available in our community. What’s Hockey in Saugeen Shores? It’s the volunteers that coach our children and teach them how to be a team; it’s the referees that help drive the desire for honest play; the parents that wake up early so their children can make it to the rink for early team practices; the staff that take care of the ice and arena space to keep it safe for all of the teams that use it; and even the municipal Councillors that make it their mission to ensure team sport organizations are able to use our local facilities. All in all, we love Hockey in Saugeen Shores and would love the opportunity to show it to the rest of Canada by becoming Kraft Hockeyville!
